Have you heard there are sea creatures coming to Taupo Museum? Including one of colossal proportions!
To celebrate, Taupo Museum is offering an educational and entertaining 40-minute event, free for school groups and held in conjunction with Te Papa’s touring Colossal Squid exhibition.
A class-sized group gather in the Wharenui, before being split into two – one group explores the colossal squid exhibition armed with a teacher or self-directed activity sheet while the other group goes on the fish watching safari. After 20 minutes the groups swap.
Maui is on a fish-watching safari called ‘Kei raro i te moana | Under the sea’, where taxidermy combines with puppetry to create a unique, fish-centric tour. Participants of all ages select a puppet from the Toro Pikopiko collection, to join a school of fish that ‘swim’ around the museum, led by a young Maui. They’ll discover a variety of stuffed marine creatures on display such as a crocodile, piranha, sea turtle, puffer fish, horseshoe crab and even a squid that has been turned into a miniature sailing ship! The Ora Garden will feature fish mobiles, taniwha & giant koura puppets that participants can interact with and animate.
